8,500 Steps Could Be the Key to Long-Term Weight Loss Maintenance

Forget the arbitrary 10,000-step goal. Scientists have found the precise number of daily steps that helps people keep weight off for years.

For years, the hum of a pedometer or the buzz of a smartwatch has pushed millions toward the elusive target of 10,000 steps a day. It is a ubiquitous goal, embedded in fitness culture. But when it comes to managing obesity—a condition projected to affect over 30% of the global population by 2035—a new study suggests we might have been focusing on the wrong phase of the journey.

A comprehensive meta-analysis  has untangled the complicated relationship between walking and weight, revealing that steps are less critical for losing weight than for keeping it off. The magic number isn’t 10,000; it’s approximately 8,500 steps per day, but the secret lies entirely in consistency.

The Great Walking Misconception

“We have always assumed that telling someone to walk more will directly help them lose weight,” explains the study team from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. “But our data shows that during the active weight loss phase, diet is the protagonist. Walking is the crucial supporting actor that prevents the relapse.”

The researchers analyzed 18 randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the gold standard of scientific evidence, involving 3,758 adults with overweight or obesity. They looked at two distinct phases: the active weight loss phase (averaging 7.88 months) and the subsequent weight maintenance phase (averaging 10.27 months).

The results were striking. During the active weight loss phase, participants in structured lifestyle modification programs (combining diet, behavioral therapy, and exercise advice) lost an average of 4.39% of their body weight. The control groups, receiving usual care, lost only 1.25% .

However, when the researchers analyzed step counts, they found no direct link between walking more and losing more weight during this initial phase. The weight loss came from calorie restriction.

The true value of walking only became visible months later. For those who managed to maintain a higher step count—specifically around 8,500 steps per day—into the maintenance phase, the results were transformative.

The study found that for every 1,000 steps a person walked per day above their baseline during the maintenance phase, they sustained an additional 1.1% weight loss from their starting weight.

“Think of walking as the glue,” the researchers note. “Diet gets the weight off, but walking keeps it off.”

Participants in the lifestyle arms walked an average of 8,453 steps/day at the end of the weight loss phase and 8,241 steps/day during maintenance. In contrast, control groups stagnated at around 7,000 steps, eventually dropping to 6,757 steps, and subsequently regained weight.

Why This Matters Now

With obesity rates soaring, healthcare systems are struggling to find affordable, scalable solutions. Anti-obesity medications are expensive and often inaccessible. Bariatric surgery, while effective, is invasive.

Lifestyle modification—encouraging a daily walk—is essentially free. This study provides the precise behavioral target for doctors to prescribe.

“This isn’t about running marathons,” says the research team. “This is about a fundamental change in daily living: getting up, moving, and crucially, not stopping when the diet ends.”

The study also debunks the “all-or-nothing” mentality. While the control groups showed no significant changes, the lifestyle groups proved that gradual improvement works. At the start of the studies, both groups were similar (roughly 7,200 steps/day). The difference was the intentional increase.

What Does 8,500 Steps Look Like?

For a sedentary person, 8,500 steps is approximately 4 miles (6.4 kilometers). It represents about 85 minutes of brisk walking or integrating movement into every part of the day: a 30-minute morning walk, a 15-minute stroll after lunch, parking farther away, and taking the stairs.

The study suggests using a pedometer or smartwatch not to obsess over a random number, but to track progress toward a validated target.

Limitations and Cautions

This is a systematic review and meta-analysis, which is a study of studies. While it shows a powerful association between 8,500 steps and weight maintenance, it does not prove direct causation. The researchers note high heterogeneity (variability) between the studies, meaning different programs worked for different people.

Furthermore, the study mostly looked at adults (average age 52) and did not extensively cover children, adolescents, or those on weight-loss drugs. The participants were in formal “lifestyle modification programs,” meaning they also received dietary counseling. Walking alone, without dietary changes, is unlikely to produce these results.

The Final Verdict

If you are starting a diet next Monday, don’t expect walking to melt the fat away instantly. Focus on your plate.

But if you have lost weight and want to ensure it doesn’t come back next year, start walking. Aim for 8,500 steps. But more importantly, aim to keep walking forever.

As the study concludes: *”Patients should be encouraged to adopt an active lifestyle… targeting approximately 8500 steps/day, and such a level should be maintained during the maintenance phase.”*
